KALAMAZOO, Mich.鈥擶estern Michigan University students will have one more study spot on campus this fall. The University Libraries will reopen the Swain Library in Sangren Hall for open study and academic programming starting Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Western students and employees must swipe their Bronco Card to enter during open hours. Swain will be available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays during fall semester.

鈥淪wain is a wonderful facility, and we鈥檙e excited to reopen this space for student study and programming,鈥 says Julie Garrison, dean of University Libraries. 鈥淲e are prioritizing this space for 麻豆社students to create an environment focused on study, collaboration and academics. Waldo Library will continue to be available to our broader community during our public hours.鈥

Swain Library temporarily closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Libraries later relocated Swain鈥檚 collections to Waldo Library. During that time, the Libraries partnered with campus departments to offer academic support services in Swain.

鈥淥ur campus partners will continue their work in Swain this year, but we鈥檙e ready to get students back into this space for open study,鈥 says Garrison.

In addition to open study space, the Libraries will offer academic programming in Swain, including new study communities for students to meet new people, make connections and study together.

Swain is located in Sangren Hall on the second floor and is only a few minutes away from Waldo Library, making it easy for students to access Waldo鈥檚 Service Desk, collections, computers, printers and study rooms.

鈥淪wain鈥檚 proximity to Waldo Library makes it easy for students to get the library services and resources they need,鈥 says Sara Volmering, marketing manager for University Libraries. 鈥淪wain and Waldo are both wonderful study spots for students, and we鈥檙e excited to have both available this fall.鈥

鈥淧roviding space for study, collaboration and learning is just one way the Libraries supports students鈥 academic success,鈥 adds Garrison. 鈥淲e encourage all 麻豆社students to take advantage of our library services and resources and the Swain, Waldo Library and the Zhang Legacy Collections Center facilities this fall.鈥

麻豆社students and employees are to celebrate the reopening from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7Learn more about library collections, services and spaces.
